But Mallorca has even more to offer: Countless cultural treasures and fascinating sights are also waiting for you. The island’s capital Palma de Mallorca in particular offers a wealth of sights and is a magnet for visitors who want to experience lively markets, picturesque alleyways and historic architecture.
Here are some of the most important sights in Mallorca:
La Seu Cathedral
- Description: The Gothic cathedral is the landmark of Palma. It was built over several centuries and is particularly famous for its imposing rose window, which is one of the largest in the world. The famous architect Antoni Gaudí worked on the renovation of the interior at the beginning of the 20th century.
- Location: Directly by the sea, in the old town of Palma.
Palacio Real de La Almudaina
- Description: This royal palace is located right next to the cathedral and was originally a Muslim fortress. Today it serves as the official residence of the Spanish royal family when they visit the island.
- Special feature: The palace offers a magnificent view of the cathedral and the sea.
Castell de Bellver
* Description: This unique, circular castle is located on a hill outside the city center and offers a breathtaking panoramic view of Palma and the bay. Built in the 14th century, the castle served as a royal residence and later as a prison.
* Special feature: A wonderful place for walks and photography.
Paseo Marítimo
- Description: The picturesque harbor promenade of Palma invites you to take a stroll and offers many restaurants, bars and cafés. Along the promenade you will find the harbor with impressive yachts and historic sailing ships.
Es Baluard Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art
- Description: This museum is housed in a former fortress and offers a great overview of modern and contemporary art, including works by Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso and other well-known artists.
- Special feature: The building itself is worth a visit as it is beautifully integrated into the old fortress.
Plaza Mayor
- Description: Palma’s main square is surrounded by cafés, stores and restaurants. Here you will often find street artists and markets that reflect the lively flair of the city. It is always worth deviating from the large squares and seeking out the smaller squares and narrow alleyways. At the eastern exit of the Plaza Mayor is the small, traffic-calmed Plaza Banc de Oli with its small restaurants and cafés. At the north-western exit of the Plaza Mayor, the Rambla of Palma can be reached via wide steps. What was once a riverbed is now an avenue lined with plane trees and lined with many restaurants leading towards the university. Many flower stores offer their wares on the Rambla. There is also often a market here for artisans selling beautiful jewelry or woodwork or other gifts or souvenirs. Again from the Plaza Mayor, you can reach the small Plaza de en Coll via the south-eastern exit (roughly towards the cathedral and the sea). It is also very lively here. Restaurants are lined up next to each other and street performers can often be heard here, sometimes more, sometimes less. SECRET TIP: Between this square and the Plaza San Francesc, in front of the church of the same name, you will find the most beautiful old town streets with old city palaces. It is well worth wandering through these alleyways and taking a look at the architecture and relics of bygone eras in the inner courtyards.
La Lonja
- Description: This impressive Gothic building was once the maritime trade exchange and is now a cultural center. It is located in the La Lonja district of the same name, which is known for its vibrant nightlife.
Arab Baths (Baños Árabes)
- Description: The well-preserved remains of these Arab baths from the 10th century are one of the few reminders of Moorish rule on Mallorca. The surrounding garden is also a peaceful oasis in the old town.
The impressive sights make Palma a city that combines tradition, history and modernity. Palma is more than just an excursion destination – it is the beating heart of Mallorca, which is always a pleasure to discover.
